Smoke Alarm Monthly Check

Regular testing can save lives. This simple routine takes less than 5 minutes and is required by law in most Canadian provinces.

Critical Safety Note

Most fire deaths occur at night when people are sleeping. Working smoke alarms cut the risk of dying in a fire in half. Test them monthly without exception.

Monthly Testing Routine

Press and hold test button for 3-5 seconds

Confirm loud, clear alarm sounds

Test all alarms in home (bedrooms, hallways, basement)

Check LED indicator light is functioning

Vacuum dust from vents with soft brush attachment

Battery Replacement

Replace batteries annually (set calendar reminder)

Use fresh 9V batteries or manufacturer-recommended type

Never ignore chirping low-battery warnings

Test alarm immediately after battery replacement

10-Year Replacement Rule

Smoke alarms expire. Replace entire units every 10 years, even if they seem to work.

How to Check Age

Remove alarm from ceiling and check the back for manufacturing date. If it's 10+ years old or undated, replace immediately.

Carbon Monoxide Detectors

CO detectors are required by law in most Canadian provinces. They save lives in homes with gas appliances, fireplaces, or attached garages.

Install near bedrooms and sleeping areas

Place on each level of multi-story homes

Test monthly using test button

Replace batteries annually

Replace entire unit every 5-7 years (check manual)

If Alarm Sounds

For smoke alarms: Evacuate immediately and call 911 from outside. For CO alarms: Get fresh air, evacuate, and call 911. Never ignore alarms or assume they're false.
